ASQ Master Black Belt (CMBB): Requirements, Portfolio, Exam

Updated on 23 September 2026. What’s new: exam time corrected to 5 hours and 20 minutes inside the five-and-a-half-hour appointment ASQ lists for the CMBB

Most ASQ certifications begin with an application and end with an exam. The Certified Master Black Belt (CMBB) begins with a judgement. Before you can book a seat, a panel of practising Master Black Belts reads a portfolio of your Black Belt work and scores it against three indicators. Fail there and the exam never happens. That review, not the 110-question paper, is where most CMBB attempts end.

ASQ MBB certification study tips cover with a candidate preparing on a laptop

This guide is written for Certified Six Sigma Black Belts who have run enough projects to wonder whether the next credential is within reach. It sets out who ASQ lets apply, what the portfolio has to prove and how it is scored, what the whole thing costs, when the exam is actually held, how the scored questions are distributed across the Body of Knowledge, and what keeps the credential alive afterwards. Every figure below is either from the exam details we publish or from ASQ's own pages, checked in September 2026.

One structural point is worth fixing in your head before anything else, because it changes how you budget and how you plan your year. The CMBB is two gates with two separate payments. The first buys a reading of your career evidence. The second buys a seat in a Prometric test centre. Passing the first tells you nothing about the second, and paying for the first does not reserve the second.

PMI-CP Certification: Cost, Course Modules and Exam Guide

Updated on 1 October 2026. What’s new: eligibility is four PMI course modules plus three years of construction or built-environment project experience in the past ten years

If you run site packages, subcontracts or a contractor's project team, the PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP) is the PMI credential written for that work, and half of its 120 questions are about contracts management. Getting there takes four PMI course modules and three years of construction or built-environment project experience from the past ten years. The exam itself runs 230 minutes and costs USD $399 for PMI members or USD $499 at full price.

That first paragraph is worth reading twice, because the PMI-CP is not a general project management test with a construction label on it. PMI built it from a job task analysis of people who run capital projects: owners' representatives, contractors, programme managers and claims specialists. The questions reflect that. You will be asked what to do when a contractor's notice arrives, which delivery method moves risk to the right party, and how to keep fifteen packages talking to each other. A candidate who only knows scheduling and earned value will find a lot of the paper unfamiliar.

PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam: Format, Open-Book Rules and Prep Plan

The PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam is open book, but that does not make it easy. You get 150 minutes and 70 marks, and you need 60% to pass, so the manual only helps if you already know where things are and can apply them to a described project. This guide covers the format, who may sit it and how to prepare.

Search for this exam and you will find two kinds of advice. One says the open-book rule means you can turn up with no revision and look everything up. The other says it is a memory test in disguise. Both are wrong. The paper rewards candidates who have used the method on real or imagined projects, so the pages they open are the right ones and the answers reflect a decision, not a definition.

Everything below about the exam itself comes from the exam figures we hold for this credential and from PeopleCert's own PRINCE2 7 Practitioner page, checked in September 2026. Where the two differ, the text says so.

Is the PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam really open book, and what does that change?

Yes. PeopleCert lists the Practitioner exam as open book and as "objective testing", which means the answers are chosen or scored against a fixed key rather than written as essays. The exam is web-based and proctored, so you sit it at a computer under supervision instead of in a classroom.

ICBB Certification: Inside the IASSC Black Belt Exam

You have run Green Belt projects for years, closed charters, and shown savings to a steering committee. Can a knowledge exam prove any of that? Not the projects themselves. What the IASSC Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (ICBB) proves is that you command the full Black Belt toolset, from non-parametric tests to fractional factorials, without notes and against the clock. That is a different claim, and for many practitioners it is the missing one.

This article is about the ICBB exam itself: what the letters mean, what the Body of Knowledge asks for in each DMAIC phase, what "knowledge-based, no project" really means for someone who already has project scars, and how to prepare for a long, closed-book paper. It is written for the experienced Green Belt who is weighing whether the step up is worth the study time.

What does ICBB mean, and what does the certificate say about you?

ICBB stands for IASSC Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. IASSC is the International Association for Six Sigma Certification, which has been part of the PeopleCert portfolio since 2020. The ICBB is its top belt: above the Yellow Belt (ICYB) and the Green Belt (ICGB), and built on the same five-phase structure of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control.

PHRi Certification: Meaning, Cost and How to Pass

The PHRi exam puts 115 questions in front of you, yet only 90 of them count towards your result. The other 25 are trial items that HRCI is testing for future exams, and nothing marks them out. You get 135 minutes plus 30 minutes of administration time, you pay $395 for the exam and $100 to apply, and you need a scaled score of 500 on a scale of 100-700.

Those numbers shape how you should prepare. Because the trial items are invisible, you cannot ignore any question, and because the pass line is a scaled score rather than a percentage, chasing a fixed share of correct answers misleads you. This guide sets out what the letters mean, who HRCI lets in, what the questions look like, how the seven functional areas are weighted, what the exam costs and what to do if it goes wrong, followed by an eight-week training plan. Every exam fact comes from HRCI or from our exam summary, checked in September 2026.

What does PHRi mean, and who is the exam for?

PHRi stands for Professional in Human Resources - International. It is a credential awarded by HRCI, the Human Resource Certification Institute, and it certifies that you can carry out the technical and operational side of HR: recruiting, pay and benefits, employee relations, learning, HR data and the day-to-day handling of people problems. HRCI classes it as a professional certification, one step above the knowledge-level aPHRi and one step below the strategic SPHRi.
