Answering the practice questions felt like a professional interrogation, but for my own benefit. It was a pleasant experience overall.

ASCM CPIM Career Roadmap: Roles, CSCP, CLTD and Renewal

You have spent four years as a demand planner, and your manager has hinted at a supply chain manager opening next spring. Do you sit CPIM now, add CSCP first, or wait? For most planners the answer is CPIM first. It is one ASCM exam of 150 questions, version 9.0 since 1 June 2026, and it fits planning, scheduling and inventory work more closely than any other ASCM credential. CSCP and CLTD suit what comes after.

CPIM Exam Technique: Calculations, Scenarios and Pacing

Myth: the CPIM exam rewards whoever has memorised the most definitions. It does not. ASCM's exam content manual describes questions that usually want you to evaluate a scenario or finish a calculation, and then choose the best of four options. Version 9.0 gives you 150 of them in 210 minutes, so technique on stems, arithmetic and the clock decides the close results.

ASCM CPIM Certification: Planning Skills That Prevent Stockouts

Updated on 21 September 2026. What’s new: updated for CPIM version 9.0, with the current single-exam format, fees and nine content areas.

On Monday the sales team reports a stockout on the product customers want most. On Thursday the warehouse manager asks where to put another pallet of a product nobody has ordered in months. Both problems come from the same place: a plan that did not connect demand, supply and inventory. The ASCM CPIM (Certified in Planning and Inventory Management) credential tests exactly that connection, in one 150-question exam of three and a half hours.

ASCM, the Association for Supply Chain Management, is the body formerly known as APICS, and it still uses that older name as the brand on its certifications, so a search for the old name leads to the same credential described here. This article covers what the exam looks like after the version 9.0 update, what each of the nine content areas asks, what it costs, how to prepare and what the credential does for a planning career. All exam details were checked against ASCM's own pages in September 2026.

What is the ASCM CPIM certification, and who is it for?

CPIM certifies the people who decide what gets made, bought, stored and shipped, and when. ASCM describes the program as an international standard for assessing planning and inventory skills, and it has run for more than fifty years. The subject matter covers demand and supply planning, material and capacity requirements, sales and operations planning, inventory control, detailed scheduling, distribution, quality and continuous improvement.

CPIM Part 1 Is Gone: Moving Your Study Plan to CPIM 9.0

Updated on 22 September 2026. What’s new: CPIM is now a single exam, so the old Part 1 and Part 2 split is replaced by the current version 9.0 exam.

You pull your CPIM Part 1 study guide off the shelf, open it at the inventory chapter you half finished, and go to book the exam. There is no Part 1 to book. ASCM, the association formerly called APICS, ran its last Part 1 and Part 2 sittings on 1 February 2024, and since 1 June 2026 the only exam is CPIM 9.0: one paper that covers the whole program. Much of what you learned still counts. The plan around it has to change.

This article is for candidates who studied, or started studying, under the old two-part model. It explains what happened to Part 1 and Part 2, whether a Part 1 pass still counts, which Part 1 topics carry straight into CPIM 9.0 and which areas are new, whether your old books are still safe to use, how to rebuild a study plan without starting from zero, and how to handle one long exam instead of two shorter ones. Everything here was checked against ASCM's own candidate documents in September 2026.

What happened to CPIM Part 1 and Part 2?

For several years the APICS CPIM credential was earned in two steps. Part 1 covered the foundations of supply chain planning, and Part 2 went deeper into the techniques a planner uses every day. Under version 7.0 you needed both passes to hold the certification. That model ended with version 8.0, and version 9.0 has now replaced 8.0 in turn.
