The OMG SysMLv2 Model User certification is the first credential in the Object Management Group's SysML v2 certification program, and the exam behind it is coded OMG-SYSML2-MU100. It tests one specific competency: whether you can read and correctly interpret a SysMLv2 model. The exam has 90 questions, runs 150 minutes in native English-speaking countries and 180 minutes everywhere else, requires 63 of 90 correct answers (70%) to pass, costs US$400 plus taxes, and carries no prerequisites. It became available on 2 June 2026, and it is the entry point to OMG's upcoming SysMLv2 Model Builder exams.

What Is the OMG SysMLv2 Model User Certification?

The OMG SysMLv2 Model User certification is a standards-based credential that verifies you can interpret models written in SysML v2 - the second-generation Systems Modeling Language published by the Object Management Group. It is not a tool certification. It does not test Cameo, Rhapsody, SysON, or any specific vendor environment. It tests the language itself.

According to OMG's SysMLv2 certification program page, the credential "tests an individual's ability to effectively read and interpret SysMLv2 models" and verifies understanding of core SysMLv2 concepts including parts, connections, actions, and requirements.

That framing matters for how you prepare. A Model User is someone who receives models built by others and has to work from them correctly - a project manager reading a structure model to understand system decomposition, a requirements engineer tracing a satisfy relationship, an analyst reading a verification case. The exam is built around comprehension, not authorship.

The certification sits at the base of a planned progression. OMG's program page states that the Model User exam is a prerequisite to the upcoming SysMLv2 Model Builder exams, and the OMG press release announcing the program confirms the SysMLv2 Model Builder Fundamental credential is expected in early 2027.

The certification is also new enough that it carries a specific advantage: the SysML v2 specification only reached formal status in September 2025, published as formal/26-03-02 (Specification - Language) and formal/26-03-03 (Specification - Transformation). The credential launched roughly nine months later. Very few practitioners hold it yet.

Note: OMG is the standards body that publishes SysML itself. That makes this a first-party credential - the organisation that defines the language is the one testing your understanding of it.

What Does OMG-SYSML2-MU100 Actually Validate?

OMG-SYSML2-MU100 validates model interpretation across six published coverage areas, weighted heavily toward language foundations and behaviour rather than authoring skill.

In practical terms, passing the exam demonstrates that you can:

  1. Read SysMLv2 in both syntaxes. SysML v2 has a textual notation and a graphical notation that describe the same underlying model. The official exam info sheet states questions are presented in "natural language as well as textual and graphical notation," so you must be fluent in both directions.
  2. Apply the definition-and-usage pattern correctly. This is the single most important structural idea in SysML v2, and it sits inside the highest-weighted exam topic.
  3. Trace behaviour. Actions, states, flows, messages, and calculations together account for a third of the exam.
  4. Navigate a model's organisation. Packages, namespaces, imports, and qualified name resolution determine what a given name actually refers to.
  5. Interpret requirements and constraints. Satisfy, verify, and constraint expressions link the model back to what the system must do.
  6. Recognise cases and supporting constructs. Analysis cases, verification cases, use cases, metadata, and quantities appear in smaller but non-zero proportions.

What it does not validate is model construction, tool workflow, methodology (such as OOSEM or MagicGrid), or organisational MBSE deployment. Those belong to the Model Builder tiers.

Who Should Take the SysMLv2 Model User Certification?

OMG identifies "engineers, project managers, and analysts working within MBSE-driven organizations" as the intended candidates on its SysMLv2 certification page. In practice, the credential fits several distinct groups.

Strong fit:

  • Systems engineers and systems architects joining or already inside a SysML v2 modelling effort
  • MBSE practitioners moving from SysML v1 who need a defensible way to show v2 competence
  • Requirements engineers who consume models rather than build them
  • Project and programme managers in digital engineering organisations who must read models to make decisions
  • Verification and validation engineers reading verification cases and satisfy/verify relationships
  • Students and early-career systems engineers - there are no eligibility requirements, no experience minimum, and no degree requirement

Also relevant:

  • OCSMP-certified professionals who want to add v2 coverage without abandoning their existing credential
  • Suppliers and subcontractors in aerospace, defence, and automotive programmes where SysML v2 models are becoming a contractual deliverable
  • Tool vendors, trainers, and consultants who need first-party proof of language fluency

The programme's sponsor list gives a useful signal about where demand is forming. Per the launch announcement, the program is sponsored at Diamond level by the U.S. Department of War, Platinum level by Dassault Systèmes, and at Gold level by Lockheed Martin and Sierra Nevada Corporation. That is a defence and aerospace concentration, which is exactly where digital engineering mandates are most advanced.

As Sandy Friedenthal, Co-Chair of the OMG Systems Modeling Community, put it at launch: "The release of the SysMLv2 Model User certification exam is an important step to enable practitioners to demonstrate their readiness to be part of a SysML v2 modeling effort."

What Is the SysMLv2 Model User Exam Format?

The OMG-SYSML2-MU100 exam uses four question formats, not one. This is the detail most candidates get wrong when they prepare.

According to the official SysMLv2 Model User exam information sheet, the exam format is:

The same sheet confirms that questions are posed using natural language as well as textual and graphical notation. So a single exam can ask you to describe a concept in plain words, read a textual SysML v2 snippet, and identify an element inside a rendered graphical view.

Two consequences follow directly:

  • Passive reading is not enough for hotspot items. You must be able to locate a construct visually inside a diagram, not merely define it. Practise pointing at things, not just naming them.
  • Multi-response items punish partial knowledge. On most exam platforms, a multi-response item is scored all-or-nothing. Knowing three of four correct answers usually earns zero.

Timing: 90 questions in 150 minutes gives you an average of 1 minute 40 seconds per question in native English-speaking countries. In all other countries the 180-minute allowance gives you 2 minutes per question. Hotspot and matching items take longer than single-response items, so budget accordingly - move fast through straightforward recall questions to bank time for the diagram-based ones.

Passing: OMG states the threshold as ≥63/90 correct answers, or ≥70% correct answers. There is no published sectional minimum, so a weak area can be offset by strength elsewhere - but with Foundations and Behavior together making up 72% of the exam, there is very little room to be weak in either.

Language: The exam information sheet grants 150 minutes in native English-speaking countries and 180 minutes in all others, with extra time confirmed by email after your exam order completes. That extra allowance is a language accommodation, and it indicates the exam is delivered in English. OMG has not published additional language versions for the SysMLv2 series - unlike its older OCSMP Model User and Model Builder Fundamental exams, which are also offered in Japanese. If you need a non-English version, contact OMG at certification@omg.org before booking rather than assuming one exists.

Note on "pass rate": OMG publishes a passing score (≥70%), not a candidate pass rate. Because the credential launched in June 2026, no authoritative statistic yet exists for what percentage of candidates pass. Treat any site quoting a SysMLv2 Model User pass rate as unsourced.

The clause map: exactly which parts of the specification are examinable

OMG's exam information sheet does something unusually helpful - it tags every sub-topic with the specification clause number it comes from. That converts a 1,000-page standard into a defined reading list. Nothing outside these clauses is examinable.

Read that table carefully, because the exclusions carry real information:

  • Clause 7.22 does not appear. Neither does 7.26. Whole clauses of the specification are simply out of scope for the Model User exam.
  • Ports are only 7.12.1 and 7.12.3 - sub-clause 7.12.2 is excluded.
  • Actions stop at 7.17.10 and skip 7.17.7 and 7.17.9, even though Actions is one of the highest-weighted sub-topics.
  • Cases are narrowly scoped. Analysis Cases and Verification Cases are only clause .2 of their sections, while Use Cases (7.25) is examinable in full.
  • Quantities jumps to clause 9.8.2, in a different part of the specification from everything else.

The practical instruction is simple: open the specification, read exactly these clauses, and do not spend time on the rest. Candidates who try to read the whole standard front to back waste most of their study hours on material that cannot be tested.

Foundations - 39%

This is the largest block and the one candidates most often underestimate, because "foundations" sounds introductory. It is not. It contains the ideas that make SysML v2 behave differently from SysML v1.

  • Elements & Relationships (clause 7.2) - everything in a SysMLv2 model is an element; relationships are themselves elements
  • Dependencies (7.3) - how one element relies on another
  • Annotations (7.4) - comments, documentation, and metadata attachments that carry meaning
  • Namespaces & Packages (7.5.1-4) - how models are organised and how a name is resolved to the element it refers to, including imports and qualified names
  • Definition & Usage (7.6.1-4, 7.6.6) - the central SysML v2 pattern: you define something once, then use it in context, and each usage can specialise the definition
  • Attributes (7.7) - typed values held by definitions and usages
  • Enumerations (7.8) - bounded sets of allowed values
  • Occurrences (7.9.1-4) - how things exist over time and space, the base for behaviour and lifecycle modelling

If you learn one thing thoroughly, make it definition and usage. Nearly every other construct in the language - parts, actions, ports, requirements, cases - is expressed as a definition/usage pair. Understanding it converts a long list of constructs into one repeated pattern.

Behavior - 33%

  • Flows & Messages (clause 7.16) - how items and information move between parts
  • Actions (7.17.1-6, 7.17.8, 7.17.10) - behaviour steps, their parameters, succession ordering, and nesting
  • States (7.18) - state definitions, transitions, entry/do/exit behaviours
  • Calculations (7.19) - computed expressions that return values

Behaviour questions frequently combine a textual snippet with a question about execution order or parameter binding. Reading action declarations and successions accurately is a high-yield skill.

Structure - 18%

  • Items (clause 7.10) - things that flow or are stored
  • Parts (7.11) - decomposition of the system into constituent parts
  • Ports (7.12.1, 7.12.3) - interaction points on parts
  • Connections (7.13) - connections between parts, typically via ports
  • Interfaces (7.14) - the definition of what passes across a connection
  • Allocations (7.15) - mapping between elements, such as logical function to physical component

Requirements & Constraints - 5%

  • Constraints (clause 7.20) - Boolean expressions that must hold
  • Requirements (7.21.1-2, 7.21.4) - requirement definitions and usages, with satisfy, verify, and subject relationships

Small weight, high leverage: this area is compact, well-bounded, and quick to learn. Do not skip roughly five questions that are easy to earn.

Cases - 3%

  • Analysis Cases (clause 7.23.2) - a structured analysis with a result
  • Verification Cases (7.24.2) - how a requirement is verified
  • Use Cases (7.25) - external interactions with the system

Supporting Concepts - 2%

What Is the Difference Between SysML and SysMLv2?

SysML v2 is not an incremental revision of SysML v1 - it is a redesigned language with its own metamodel, a formal textual syntax, and a standard API. That is why OMG created a separate certification series for it rather than updating the existing one.

The practical consequences for an exam candidate are worth stating plainly:

  1. Diagram-type memorisation no longer carries you. SysML v1 exams leaned on knowing nine diagram types. SysML v2 organises around constructs and the definition/usage pattern instead.
  2. You must read text, not only pictures. SysML v2's textual notation is normative, and OMG's exam explicitly uses it.
  3. v1 habits can actively mislead. If you reflexively read a "part" in v2 as a v1 "part property on a block", you will misinterpret specialisation and redefinition.
  4. Interoperability is a design goal, not an afterthought. Daniel Hettema, Director of Digital Engineering, Modeling and Simulation at the U.S. Department of War, framed SysMLv2 at launch as a critical advancement toward the Department's digital thread vision, enabled by API-first interoperability across engineering ecosystems.

If you are transitioning from v1, budget explicit unlearning time. Experienced v1 modellers often score worse on Foundations than beginners do, because they map new terms onto old meanings.

Is SysMLv2 Certification Different From OCSMP?

Yes. OCSMP and the SysMLv2 series are separate programs covering different versions of the language, and holding one does not exempt you from the other.

OCSMP - OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional - is the older series built around SysML v1. It has four tiers: Model User, Model Builder Fundamental, Model Builder Intermediate, and Model Builder Advanced, with Intermediate requiring Fundamental and Advanced requiring Intermediate. OCSMP exams are priced at $350 each and are also delivered through Pearson VUE.

Which should you take? If your organisation is running SysML v1 today and has no migration plan, OCSMP still reflects your daily work. If your organisation has committed to v2, is evaluating v2 tooling, or works in a defence or aerospace supply chain, OMG-SYSML2-MU100 is the forward-looking choice - and it is the required entry point to the v2 Model Builder track. Many practitioners will end up holding both during the transition period.

How Does SysMLv2 Support MBSE?

SysMLv2 supports Model-Based Systems Engineering by making the model itself machine-readable, precisely defined, and programmatically accessible - so the model can serve as the authoritative source of truth rather than as documentation about it.

Three properties do the work:

  • Formal semantics. Because v2 is built on its own precisely specified metamodel rather than layered on UML stereotypes, two tools interpreting the same model reach the same conclusions. Ambiguity that had to be resolved by convention in v1 is resolved by the specification in v2.
  • A standard API. The v2 release is designed around programmatic access, which lets analysis tools, simulation environments, requirements databases, and PLM systems read and write the same model without brittle file conversion.
  • Textual notation. A normative textual syntax means models can be diffed, merged, reviewed, and version-controlled with ordinary software engineering tooling.

Together these turn a systems model from a diagram archive into an engineering artefact that participates in a digital thread. That is the connection between the language and the workforce credential. As Terrance Milligan, OMG's Director of Certification Programs, said at the program launch: "Innovative and next-generation MBSE can only begin to be realized once a workforce understands, applies, and eventually optimizes the standard."

The Model User certification targets the first of those three verbs. It is the workforce-readiness layer beneath the tooling.

What Can You Earn With SysMLv2 and MBSE Skills?

MBSE systems engineering roles in the United States pay roughly $107,000 to $153,000 on average depending on the salary source, with senior practitioners above $180,000 in aerospace and defence hubs.

One caveat first, stated plainly: there is no salary data specific to OMG-SYSML2-MU100 holders. The credential launched in June 2026, and no survey has yet isolated it. The figures below describe the MBSE and systems engineering roles the certification supports, which is the honest way to read them.

Three points worth drawing out:

  1. Demand is growing faster than average. The BLS projects employment of industrial engineers to grow 11% from 2024 to 2034, described as much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 25,200 openings each year over the decade.
  2. Certification correlates with higher pay in this field. Industry compensation analyses of systems engineering credentials report certified engineers earning roughly 10–20% more than uncertified peers, varying by credential and region. That pattern is established for INCOSE credentials; whether it holds for SysMLv2 specifically is not yet measurable.
  3. The geography follows the sponsors. Defence and aerospace concentrations pay the most - Colorado Springs is reported near 176, 000 for systems engineering roles, and California and Washington D.C.around 131,000. Those are precisely the regions where the SysMLv2 program's Diamond and Gold sponsors operate.

Note: The aggregator figures above (ERI, Glassdoor, Salary Expert, PayScale) are self-reported salary estimates, not government statistics, and the same job title varies widely between them. Use the BLS median as your anchor and the aggregators as a range.

The more defensible career argument for OMG-SYSML2-MU100 is not a salary premium - it is timing. The specification became formal in September 2025 and the first credential launched in June 2026. Organisations adopting v2 now need people who can already read v2 models, and very few candidates hold the credential yet.

How Should You Prepare for the OMG-SYSML2-MU100 Exam?

Prepare by learning the definition-and-usage pattern first, then working outward through Foundations and Behavior - which together are 72% of the exam - while reading real SysML v2 models in both notations from day one.

OMG does not publish a recommended study duration. The plan below is ProcessExam editorial guidance based on the published syllabus weights, and assumes roughly six to eight hours of study per week.

Weeks 1-2: Foundations, part one

  • Learn definition vs usage until you can explain it without notes and spot it in unfamiliar constructs
  • Cover elements, relationships, dependencies, attributes, enumerations
  • Start reading textual SysML v2 daily, even short snippets
  • Write out, in your own words, what each construct means - recall beats re-reading

Weeks 3-4: Foundations, part two + Structure

  • Namespaces, packages, imports, qualified names - practise resolving a name to the element it points to
  • Occurrences and annotations
  • Move into Structure: items, parts, ports, connections, interfaces, allocations
  • Sketch a small system yourself - even a coffee machine or a drone - as parts, ports, and connections

Weeks 5-6: Behavior

  • Actions: declarations, parameters, succession, nesting
  • States: transitions, entry/do/exit
  • Flows and messages between parts
  • Calculations and expression evaluation
  • Trace execution order by hand through textual action snippets; this is where multi-response questions cluster

Week 7: Requirements, Constraints, Cases, Supporting Concepts

  • Requirements definitions and usages with satisfy, verify, subject
  • Constraints as Boolean expressions
  • Analysis, verification, and use cases
  • Metadata and quantities
  • This week is only 10% of the exam but it is the cheapest 10% to secure

Week 8: Consolidation and timed practice

  • Work through the free OMG-SYSML2-MU100 sample questions to calibrate question style before spending money on anything
  • Run full-length timed sets at exam pace - 90 items, 150 minutes
  • Re-read weak areas identified by your scores, not by your intuition
  • Re-check the published syllabus topics one final time and confirm you can say something substantive about every sub-topic listed

Study techniques that fit this exam specifically

  • Practise in both notations. For every construct, look at the textual form and the graphical form side by side. The exam moves between them.
  • Point, don't just name. Because hotspot items exist, quiz yourself by locating constructs inside a diagram rather than reciting definitions.
  • Drill multi-response deliberately. Train yourself to check every option independently instead of stopping at the first plausible one.
  • Read models you did not write. The whole competency being tested is comprehension of someone else's model.
  • Study the specification by clause, not cover to cover. OMG tags every examinable sub-topic with its clause number in the exam information sheet - the full map is in the syllabus section above. Open the SysML v2 Specification - Language document, read only clauses 7.2 through 7.27 as listed plus 9.8.2, and ignore the rest. This single tactic saves more study time than any other on this exam.
  • Turn the clause map into a checklist. Twenty-five clause entries, six coverage areas. Tick each one off only when you can read an example in both notations and explain it aloud.

Use OMG's own published material as your authority, then use practice questions to convert reading into recall.

Primary, authoritative sources:

  2. The OMG SysMLv2 certification program page - programme structure, progression, and registration path.
  3. The SysML v2 formal specification - normative definitions, and the tie-breaker whenever a secondary source contradicts another.

Preparation resources:

  • Start with the 10 free SysMLv2 Model User sample questions, which cover behaviour declarations, allocation and satisfy statements, package organisation and imports, the definition-and-usage pattern, namespace resolution, and action parameters. They are free, so use them to decide whether you are ready to move to timed practice.
  • The OMG-SYSML2-MU100 practice test offers 180+ practice questions with unlimited attempts and randomised ordering for $36.80 with two months of access, plus result history so you can see which coverage areas are actually weak rather than guessing.

A word on sourcing. Because SysMLv2 launched recently, a great deal of SysML content online still describes v1. Before trusting any study material, check whether it uses the definition-and-usage pattern and textual notation. If it is organised around nine diagram types and blocks, it is v1 material and will teach you the wrong model.

Avoid any material advertised as containing actual exam questions. Beyond the ethics and the violation of OMG's exam agreement, such material is a poor fit for this exam in particular: hotspot and matching items over graphical notation do not transfer to a text list of questions and answers.

How Do You Register, Schedule, Retake, and Renew?

You register and schedule through Pearson VUE, and can sit the exam either online with a proctor or at a secure test centre.

Registration and scheduling. Create or sign in to your Pearson VUE account, then book, purchase, cancel, and reschedule the exam there. Your exam receipts and score reports live in the same account. If you intend to test online, run Pearson VUE's system test on your computer before scheduling - technical failures on exam day are avoidable and expensive.
